I have a Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s, and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, all received from the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milano, Italy). My PhD thesis was titled \u201cEvolutionary Inference of Biological Systems Accelerated on Graphics Processing Units<\/a>\u201c. My advisor was Professor Giancarlo Mauri<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am Associate Professor<\/a> in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics (DAIS) of the Ca\u2019 Foscari University of Venice, Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am the Rector\u2019s delegate<\/a> for Digital Innovation and Integrity in Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am member of European Commission’s AI Act Advisory Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am the scientific vice-coordinator of CONVECS<\/a> – “Venetian Community for Scientific Computation”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am part of the B4 \u2014 Bicocca Bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Bioimaging inter-departmental research center (Italy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am Senior member of IEEE. I am member of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2025, I am chair of the IEEE CIS Bioinformatics and Bioengineering Technical Committee<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been Chair of the IEEE BBTC Task Force for \u201cAdvanced Representation\u201d<\/a> of candidate solutions in bio-medical research from 2019 to 2023. I am currently also member of the IEEE BBTC Task Force on “Computational Intelligence in Health and Medicine”<\/a> (CIHM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am member of the FRACTALS<\/a> (Fair and Responsible Algorithms for Complex-systems, Therapeutics, Astrophyics, and Life Sciences) research group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am currently member of the COST Action CA21169 \u201cInformation, Coding, and Biological Function: the Dynamics of Life (DYNALIFE)\u201d<\/a>. I belong to the Working Group \u201cStatistical and probabilistic modelling and analysis, bioinformatics and machine learning\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have received the Italian ASN (“Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale”) for both the role of Full Professor in Computer Science (sett. 01\/B1) and Software Engineering (sett. 09\/H1). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some past affiliations and activities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

From 2022 to 2024 I have been Associate Editor for Frontiers in Genetics<\/a>, specialty section Computational Genomics. I have been guest editor for IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine (CIM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2016 and 2019 I have been member of the ICT COST Action IC1406 \u201cHigh-Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications\u201d. I belonged to the Working Group 3 \u201cHPC-enabled Modelling for Life Sciences\u201d and I have been leader of the Case Study \u201cTowards Human Cell Simulation\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2018 and 2019 I have been “Cooperative Research Fellow” of the RCAST — Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (The University of Tokyo, Japan).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2021 and 2024 I have been member of EAISI — The Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research interests<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

My main research interest is Computational Intelligence<\/strong> in many forms: Evolutionary Computation (EC), Swarm Intelligence (SI), Fuzzy Logic (FL), Machine Learning (ML).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I extensively exploit creative combinations of such techniques to create automatic tools able to tackle complex problems in biomedical disciplines<\/strong>, including clinical decision support, medical image analysis, and drug discovery. I recently opened a new research direction with Milano’s INFN, focusing on the prediction of cosmic rays propagation <\/strong>within the heliosphere by means of stochastic modeling and simulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EC, SI, and ML methods provide powerful means to tackle hard computational problems; however, these approaches are computationally demanding activities. For this reason, I also work on the optimization and acceleration of algorithms. In particular, I largely rely on high-performance infrastructures<\/strong>, in particular clusters of GPUs, to leverage the relevant computational power offered by new generation accelerators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
